Water Fights Obesity

Often weight loss advice will include urging people to drink more water in their regimen.  It is touted as helping to curb appetite and thereby avoid overeating.  In a recent study published in the Annals of Family Medicine, researchers wanted to measure the real relationship between proper hydration, BMI and obesity.  They evaluated data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009 to 2012.  They included a nationally representative sample of over 9500 people aged 18-64 years.  Models were adjusted to account for known risk factors including age, race/ethnicity, sex, and income-to-poverty ratio.  Hydration levels were assessed by urine concentration.  Of the sample, roughly 1/3 were inadequately hydrated.  These individuals also had higher BMIs as well as higher odds of being obese (59%) even after adjusting for other risk factors.  With such a significant association between proper hydration and lower BMI and obesity, it is apparent that water may deserve an even greater focus in weight management research and clinical strategies.   Your doctor of chiropractic can help you with many more tips on healthy eating.
