Get Adjusted and Boost Your Immune System

It has been said that if you want to know what is important to someone, look at how they spend their money.  If that is true, then the $40+ billion spent each year by Americans suggest we REALLY want to feel better.

In recent years, “wellness” has become a new healthcare buzzword, even in hospitals.  However, our medical schools typically focus much more on disease care training than wellness care training.

Thus, medicine and the pharmaceutical industry has, at best, struggled to keep up with the wellness focus.  This situation has given rise to “functional medicine” practitioners who utilize vitamins, herbs, exercise and other natural means to guide patients towards a healthy lifestyle, many of whom are not medical doctors.

The idea behind the wellness movement, is that if we can do things preventatively to strengthen our bodies, then our own immune system will be better able to fight off viruses, bacteria, and other diseases.  Wikipedia (2016)1 defines immunity as “the balanced state of having adequate biological defenses to fighting infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion, while having adequate tolerance to avoid allergy, and autoimmune diseases. It is the capability of the body to resist harmful microorganisms or viruses from entering it.”

The link between hormones, such as cortisol, and immunity has been described by multiple researchers and articles.  The Adrenal Fatigue Solution states: “The hormones produced by your adrenal glands, particularly the stress hormone cortisol, play an important role in regulating your immune system. . . . Maintaining a balanced level of cortisol is an important part of staying healthy.”2

Researchers at the University of Madrid Medical School in Madrid Spain and the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Jaen Spain, Plaza-Manzano (2014) found a link between immunity and chiropractic care.

They discovered that certain transmitters in the brain, including the hormone cortisol, are increased when a patient receives a chiropractic adjustment.  The increase did not occur with patients who received other treatments or placebo.

As B.J. Palmer stated: “Every organ is connected to the one under your hat.”  Maintaining good spinal health allows the brain and the body to communicate freely for optimum health.  Talk to your doctor of chiropractic about the health benefits of spinal care.
