Walking campaign spurs over 26 million steps forward with chiropractic

Drs. Krista and Brock Martin of Huntingdon, TN were overwhelmed by the response of participants to step forward, and their generous sneaker donations.

NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Chiropractic Association (TCA) and its members sponsored a statewide walking campaign to help their communities achieve better health throughout the month of May.  Duly titled, Step Forward with Chiropractic (SFWC), the campaign spurred chiropractic patients and community members to keep up healthy activities and mark their progress by counting their steps.

As of the results compiled at the time of this article, SFWC participants logged over 26.5 million steps during the 4-week campaign.

Across the state, TCA member doctors took part in the campaign and provided incentives designed for an active lifestyle – from chances to win custom orthotics and walking shoes to events, like weekly Walk-With-Doc gatherings.  Some kept steppers motivated through online team-building Apps for friendly accountability, as well as social media posts with encouragement to stay active and increase their steps each day.

Dr. Andrew Dixon, TCA Immediate Past President with team member Taylor Tumlinson of Bellevue, TN handing out goodie bags to their participants.

“The TCA is thrilled that the Step Forward with Chiropractic campaign has had such a positive impact on the health of patients, and their family and friends,” said Tiffany Stevens, TCA Executive Director.  “Chiropractors are a great fit for promoting better health through walking, and why we are pleased to sponsor this campaign to help our members motivate Tennesseans to commit to an active lifestyle.”

As people geared up to start stepping, TCA doctors also hosted sneaker drives, in cooperation with Rippl, a Middle TN nonprofit, giving patients an opportunity to donate old shoes to a good cause.  The donations of gently worn sneakers serve as inventory for family businesses in developing countries to help fight global poverty.

Many who took part have shared stories about their month of step tracking and the accomplishments they made along the way.  All levels of fitness were represented, from grandmothers taking steps with their grandkids to marathoners, and even one patient who logged 627,677 steps alone.  Showing walking is not just good for the body, feedback from participants noted both physical improvements to health as well as emotional benefits.

Dr. Kara Birdwell of Maryville, TN had patients thinking big, asking them, “Where would you go?” in motivational social media posts.

Chiropractic is known for its whole health approach to patient care.  Doctors of chiropractic care for patients of all ages with a variety of health conditions and may counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, as well as occupational and lifestyle modifications.

With Tennessee ranked in the bottom 10 states for physical inactivity as reported by the United Health Foundation’s 2018 America’s Health Rankings, TCA members are proud to be able to make a difference through this statewide effort and help the communities they serve step forward and reap the benefits!
