Chiropractic is a Part of Olympic Preparation for Many Athletes

In 2018, the United States sent 244 competitors to PyeongChang, South Korea for the Winter Olympics Games.  Team USA makes up, not only the largest delegation at this year’s Olympics (about 9% of the total 2800 athletes participating in the games), but this will be the largest delegation to EVER attend the Winter games.  In order to make it to the Olympics, these athletes have had years of preparation, training, overcoming disappointments and achieving success.

As Team USA prepares for and participates in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, a number of professions come together to help prepare and support them.  One important aspect is the medical care athletes receive.  Chiropractic provides safe, effective treatment for and prevention of many injuries.  In addition, it promotes wellness and optimal performance by keeping the body working properly and efficiently.  And, because it does not utilize pharmaceuticals, there is no concern for interference with drug tests to which the athletes are subject.

Chiropractor Bill Moreau, DC, DACBSP, FACSM, CSCS was promoted to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Director of Sports Medicine Clinics in 2009.  The USOC Sports Medicine staff includes chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, physicians and other medical professionals, who are responsible for the delivery of health care to athletes participating in U.S. Olympic Training Center programs.  The training centers are located in Colorado Springs, CO, Chula Vista, CA, and Lake Placid, NY.

Together, Dr. Moreau, the USOC Training Center full time employees, interns and consultants work to develop “an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach” to provide “prevention, evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses.”   In addition to the Training Centers, all of which include chiropractors on staff, athletes’ care is supplemented by providers in the USOC Sports Medicine Volunteer Program when needed.  There are 83 chiropractors listed on the USOC National Medical Network making up approximately 36% of the total providers listed on the website.

You don’t have to be an Olympic level athlete to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.  Doctors of chiropractic are highly trained to provide both preventative care as well as treatment when an injury does occur.  In fact, USOC Director of Sports Medicine Clinics Dr. Bill Moreau was a speaker at TCA’s 2017 Southern Chiropractic Conference where he shared his knowledge with over 250 chiropractors in Tennessee.  He will be training more chiropractors in the summer of 2018 in Nashville.

Talk to your local chiropractor about ways they can help you with wellness goals, prevent injuries, treat old injuries, and achieve a healthier lifestyle.  If you do not have a regular chiropractor, you can find a TCA member doctor here.  Whether you are a competitor, a coach or one who cheers for the team, you deserve to be healthy and pain free.  Chiropractic can help.
