Adults NEED To Move

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cites physical activity as a major factor in healthy aging.

“It can help delay, prevent, or manage many costly chronic diseases faced by adults 50 years or older. Physical activity can also reduce the risk of premature death.”

However, the majority of adults over 50 are not getting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity each week.  Activity levels for those with chronic conditions are even lower than their peers.

Despite the fact that “4 in 5 of the most costly chronic conditions among adults 50 years or older can be prevented or managed with physical activity,” roughly 20% of the adults in that age group are inactive.  Among those already diagnosed with a chronic condition, the inactivity rate exceeds 30%.

It is important for all individuals, regardless of age to be as active as possible.   It doesn’t have to be an hour long aerobics class.  Anytime you are exert a moderate or vigorous effort for a minimum of 10 minutes, your body will benefit.

The CDC has 4 suggestions for everyone:

·   Be physically active with friends, family, and work colleagues on a regular basis.

·   Make walking part of your daily routine (i.e. walk to the office, store or around the block).

·   Try a recreational program designed for your age group or mobility level.

·   Participate in local planning efforts that support safe and convenient places to be active.

Every movement you make towards a healthier lifestyle is a big step forward towards reducing health risks and improving mental outlook.  You may begin moving at a very slow pace for 10 minutes and gradually increase time and speed as you are able.

Talk to your doctor of chiropractic about what activities might be best suited to your health needs and lifestyle.  If you do not have a regular chiropractor, you can find a TCA member doctor here.  Make your move to be a healthier for the long run!
