Medicare "PECOS" Enrollment Information PECOS can be used in lieu of the Medicare enrollment application (i.e., paper CMS-855) to: There are to be several advantages of Internet-based PECOS. These include decreased staff hours and administrative expense related to enrollment in Medicare; increased control over provider enrollment information, including reassignments; and efficiency in viewing and updating provider information for accuracy. PECOS also provides a customized application process so that providers only supply information relevant to their applications. Another major benefit will be that PECOS will be faster than paper-based enrollment (45 day processing time in most cases, vs. 60 days for paper). Beginning January 3, 2011, all Medicare claims that involve a “referring or ordering provider” will be checked against the PECOS system. Chiropractors are listed as a provider type that can order or refer. This is most common for x-rays. While Medicare will not pay for DCs to take films, if a DC bills that service, a referring/ordering provider musts be listed in box 17. This is typically done by listing the rendering provider’s information. Therefore, this requirement will affect doctors who report x-ray (or any services other than the spinal manipulation codes) to Medicare. After January 3, if the provider is not enrolled in PECOS and the information is not in the provider’s master file, then the claim will be rejected. Please note that this requirement is for “claims received on or after” January 3,2011. This is not dependent on the date of service. |
